So, 5 weeks and flirting with the devil

There. I chose to log into FB and look at the one thing I was interested in. The rest is no better than it used to be. Logged out again after about 10 minutes. I don't plan on logging back in any time soon.

Technically I broke my FB sobriety just after the 5 week chip. But that's ok. If I stay out of it for a while I'll be pretty sure that while FB has done their best to make it addictive, I can do without it. Maybe if they fixed it so it showed me the things I signed up to see, fact checked the political posts, got rid of the spammers and fraud artists, and cracked down on the people using it to traffic stolen goods, I'd consider using it again.

The other thing that broke is the intense cold snap. Overnight we went from well below zero to above. The streets are rivers as the ice melts. Our community association skating event on Saturday happened, but the ice was just barely good enough. I suspect if I were to go look at it today (which would have been Sunday) it would be a lake. With another week of warm weather coming along, I'm pretty sure outdoor skating is done for the year.

The not blogged in 90 days folder is getting kind of thin. I really must get out and take one of the cameras for a walk soon. This one was the view from the bottom of the driveway at minus WTF.

The other polar bear of anticipation.

I'd mentioned there were two sequences of a polar bear sauntering across the ice towards our tundra buggy. This sequence took about 3 or 4 minutes. The other one is here, in case you missed it. The start of the whole polar bear story is here

You can't see the polar bear, just out of frame to the right. You might see a ptarmigan, with more of the flock out of frame to the left. They were not concerned about the bear.

There's so many photos today, I decided to give you a break and not include the usual of the day suspects. This feature will return in the next blog. If you want to be sure you don't miss it, send an email to keith at nucleus dot com, or leave a comment asking to be added to the blog notification list.

A short walk

Yes, it's really cold outside. Minus WTF territory. Just now our thermometer says it's -26 C in the back yard. I believe it.

1. Yesterday during the nice part of the day I bundled up and braved the cold.

It occurs to me that parka is nearly 30 years old, and is probably a collector's item for those interested in Amoco memorabilia. I was doing some winter trips to gas plants, and I had to have all the gear. Name tag and everything, just like I belonged or something. It's really warm, and typically only gets worn a few times a year. I've worn it a few times when doing photos for community association skating events, and have had a few parents comment. One worked for Amoco back in the day, but our paths never crossed.

I digress. There weren't any cars in Bebo Grove when I got there, and about a dozen when I got back. I guess it finally warmed up enough for people to venture out. Did I mention it was still minus WTF cold? The car thought it was -20 C and there was a brisk wind in the open areas. I wandered through the trees and along the river.

2.

3. Part of the dragon spine tree, though it's no longer so spiny. No chance of getting an IBTWYPDB wearing model to pose.

4. For most of the year this is a very difficult view to get. It would typically involve some wading and scrambling over tree debris.

5. Even in this cold, there is still some open water.

6. I liked the light on this chunk of wood, but It doesn't come across quite the same in a photograph.

Speaking of photos, I spent part of Saturday babysitting the documentary at cSpace. I took the laptop thinking I'd have a couple hours of quiet time, but was surprised to see a steady stream of people checking out the prints. I had a nice chat with several of them.

This is a photo of a print that turned out to be the runner up in my selection for the cSpace exhibit. There are some problems with the concept of a photo of a print, but none the less. The print looks better for several reasons.

This is actually from the end of November. It was cold then too.
