Glad none of my swim buddies saw that

Today was the first swim since the May long weekend. It's the first swim in a pool since early March or so. I can sure feel the difference. If I were being charitable, I'd say the water missed me so much it wanted to give me a big hug. The less charitable would say that I've got old, weak, feeble, sloppy, and out of shape. There is some truth to that.

There are a number of reasons I haven't been in the pool much, mostly related to working downtown these days, and wanting to drive home with Linda rather than either of us suffering the brutalities of Calgary public transit. None the less it is clear the swim holiday has to end if I want to start thinking about a certain half IM next year.

Today probably wasn't the best day for a return to the pool. I've been on the verge of having a cold the last few days. I think I'm fighting it off but you never really know these things. Still the car was due for service, and the pool is really close to where I've gone most of the time. And if you put off a workout because of something you fear, then you will never start another workout ever again in your life!

All in all, I suppose it wasn't bad. Technique was sloppy, and my arms felt feeble, but I was only just slower than a 20 minute km pace for the first part of the swim. The 100m intervals were 1:50, but I needed a longer rest than what I remember needing. These weren't the all out pace, rather, a comfortable pace to see where I'd start to fade. Which is sooner than I'd like.

I'm going to call it 20 minutes, and a good start. And yes, I remembered how to do flip turns!
